Virginia’s Class of 2026 is the largest in school history, and the university’s innovative leaders are adapting to match the changing times. To provide parking and vehicle access for first-year students, the school will be paving the Lawn and replacing it with a parking lot, President Jim Ryan announced today.

“We’re proud to make our local UNESCO heritage site more tourist-accessible, and honored to improve the on-grounds experience for our first years,” Ryan said.

The project is due to be completed by late 2024, though the construction site manager said that “we’ll be lucky if this is done by 2035.” In the meantime, the Rotunda will be converted into a parking garage to accommodate the needs of first-year commuters.
