Summer Intern Still Unsure of Purpose at Company

Donna, a third year student in the Comm school, recently completed her third week at her prestigious internship with Deloitte. Unfortunately for Donna, she is still entirely clueless as to how her role will impact the company in any way, shape, or form.
We asked Donna what she has done so far at Deloitte, to which she replied, “Ummmmm, well by the end of the first week I knew all of the Senior Partners’ Starbucks orders, which proved how responsible I was. Since then, my supervisor has entrusted me to organize an excel spreadsheet for the company. That sounded cool until I realized it was just the emergency contact spreadsheet for all of the other interns.”
Donna is not alone in her plights. A recent study done by the Worldwide Organization Realizing The Holistic Lessons Entertained by Summer Students showed that 96% of summer interns have no measurable impact on the company they work for, with 78% actually leaving their internship with a worse idea of what they want to do with their life than when they started.
